We do a lot of water purification. Mostly for Humans. But sometimes we help fish too.
We have once such customer in McHenry, IL. Our (human) clients have a nice home in McHenry. They had already softened the 22-25 grain hard water. But that wasn’t enough.
Their salt water aquarium needed cleaner water. Their Fish needed better water.
They didn’t want to buy water from an Aquarium Company because it was too expensive.
Our clients wanted an Aquarium Water Filter. They tried using a Reverse Osmosis system. But the system wasted so much water, their utility bills sky rocketed.
This was their dilemma. So what did they do?
Why You Need an Aquarium Water Filter
Tap water often contains impurities that can cause problems when added to an aquarium. These include Chlorine, Heavy Metals, Phosphate, and Nitrate. High levels of Phosphate and Nitrate supercharge algae growth. Metals like Copper are highly toxic to fish.
Fortunately, technologies like Reverse Osmosis and Deionization can remove up to 99% of these impurities. These water purification systems have become very popular with aquarium enthusiasts.
What are the Downsides to Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis (RO) forces water through a semi-permeable membrane that removes 90-99% of tap water impurities. The result is “pure water” that is free of minerals and other contaminants. That water is made very slowly (0.03 gallons per minute), and is usually stored in a pressurized tank.
The “other stuff” that was in the water is sent down the drain. That’s the “waste water”.
Small RO systems with pressurized storage tanks have problems with waste. Big problems.
A normal, non-pressurized Reverse Osmosis system will typically operate around 6% efficiency in McHenry, IL. That means for every 100 gallons you use, 6 would be pure water, and 94 gallons would be waste.
How Their Reverse Osmosis System Failed
Our clients had purchased a GE Merlin Reverse Osmosis. It seemed to be a good fit. They needed to make water very fast to refill aquarium. The Merlin was rated at 700gpd (gallons per day). But in reality, it only made about 300gpd. Purified water was made at about .21gpm (gallons per minute).
But then there was the waste. In fairness, the Merlin is better than a standard Reverse Osmosis. But at very best, the system was about 25% efficient. It would take 100 gallons to make 25 pure gallons.
That became a HUGE problem for our clients. With all the water they needed for their aquarium, the RO caused their water and sewer bills to skyrocket.
The GE Merlin Reverse Osmosis system WAS NOT a cost effective Aquarium Water Filter.
To make matters worse, the system was only giving them 85% pure water. Not clean enough for their aquarium.
LINX Evolution: A Better Aquarium Water Filter
The LINX Evolution system does an amazing job. It can produce up to 95% pure water – but it’s 70% efficient! That’s almost 90% less waste than a standard Reverse Osmosis Aquarium Water Filter!
The LINX is not affected by water temperature. It’s not affected by feed pressure. The LINX Evolution is not affected by storage tanks either.
Our clients needed 25 gallons at a time to refill their aquarium. This required a very big storage tank. The back pressure from the big tank totally killed the RO performance. But not the LINX
The LINX Evolution 140 can also produce water at 0.5gpm. That’s over 2x as fast as the GE Merlin RO. And that’s 16x faster than a standard Reverse Osmosis.
90% less waste water allowed our clients to make their own pure water, while keeping their utility bills in check.
The LINX Evolution truly is a better Aquarium Water Filter.
